The World Health Organisation recently published a report shedding light on global alcohol drinking habits. The report includes a section on the types of beverages consumed. Worldwide, alcohol is most often consumed through spirits, accounting for 45% of consumption, followed by beer 36%, with wine at 8.6%.
The map shows the drink by which the most alcohol is imbibed in each country – in terms of litres of pure alcohol - splitting it into 4 categories beer, wine, spirits and others. The latter includes things like rice wines, and beverages made from grains.
Notice the west/east hemisphere split, with beer the favourite drink in the America’s and Spirits most popular in Asia.
