Transport flow animations from the 1940s

1941 transport visualizationProving there really aren’t that many completely original ideas, here are some transport flow visualizations from the 1940s.

The video is Encyclopaedia Britannica Films newsreel called Arteries of New York City. The exact date of the movie is unclear – the copyright says 1941 but according to the Youtube description some footage is late 1940s. Presumably extra footage was added at some stage.

Check out the subway flows at 3:27, same thing for suburban trains at 4:32, and the bridge/road drawings starting 6:18 . All very low tech – but not a million miles from what folk are putting together today.
