SunIsUp on Tumblr has put together a series of maps charting the shrinkage of Native American lands. The animated gif displays land loss in the continental United States at roughly ten year intervals from 1784 to 1895. As you might imagine the change is pretty dramatic. Check it out here.
Apparently the animation is based on a chronological collection of ‘Indian’ land cession maps by Sam B Hillard, of Louisiana State University, published in 1972 in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers. Interestingly the entire article with charts is online as a 6.7MB Image file. Takes a while to download – slow server – but makes for an interesting read.
