This false colour map shows electricity outages in Japan following the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami. The image is a composite from observations by satellite F-18 of the U.S. Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program,  comparing lights in Japan that were functioning in 2010 with those working shortly after the terrible events.

Yellow represents lighting working in both 2010 and 2011. Red shows electrical power outages on March 12. Green – new lights that weren’t visible last year. Blue areas are clouds. The widespread loss of electricity in North East Honshu, around Sendai is clearly visible.
