On the Origin of Country Names

Map showing the origin of Country Names

Etymology meets Cartography.

A Reddit user going by the name of theparagon has created a neat global map showing where countries and continents get their English names. The origins range from cool –  Bhutan comes from  Land of the Thunder Dragon – to unflattering – Namibia means ‘Area where there is nothing’ apparently.

According to other Redditors the map might contains a few errors – compare with this list on Wikipedia – but fascinating all the same.
