New Image Showing Record US Snow Cover

Snow Fall in USA, January 2011A newly released image from NASA based on MODIS data from the Terra satellite, showing in detail the incredible extent of the snow coverage across the contiguous US states in January 2011.

White areas were entirely covered with snow for most of the month, pale green areas had snow cover or snowfall for part of January, dark green indicates places with no snow.

Nasa’s Earth Observatory makes the point that counterintuitively, even with all this snow, January was actually one of the driest months on record. Apparently ten inches of snow only amounts to one inch of water when it melts.
