Mapping the start of the American Civil War

Fort Sumter, American civil war map

On April 12, 1861 the first shots of the American Civil war were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. To mark the 150th anniversary ESRI has put together a map which allows you to compare current aerial imagery surrounding the fort with a chart showing buildings and military positions from 150 years ago.

The map utilizes a nifty before and after swipe bar, which you drag to select which image to view – first time I think I’ve seen this function used in a zoom-able map. Alternatively you can change the transparency of the older plan to reveal the satellite photos underneath.
