Charting 14,000 Migrant deaths in Europe since 1998

Fortrees Europe, map detailing deaths of immigrants

In French only.   A stark, in both design and content, interactive map from charting the deaths of 14,000 immigrants trying to get into Europe or incarcerated detention centres.   The map categorises the causes of deaths by either the country or migration route they occurred.

Probably won’t come as  much of a surprise that drowning (fr. noyade) on Medittaranean crossings accounts for over two thirds of fatalities.  Or that many people suffocate, die of hunger, hypothermia or in accidents  in transit.   But I was surprised to learn so many were killed while simply crossing borders.  Including 73 in minefields on the Greece-Turkey border,  or  the 235 shot by police.
